The RTI Two-Day MSK Ultrasound Course is an intensive, hands-on training experience designed to equip providers with the confidence and precision needed to integrate diagnostic and interventional musculoskeletal ultrasound into daily practice. Led by Dr. Christopher Jobe, this course emphasizes real-time imaging, needle visualization, anatomical mastery, and safe procedural technique.
This is not a lecture-only program — it is a practical immersion into high-level ultrasound application.
Day One: Upper Extremity Mastery
Day one focuses on the anatomy, pathology recognition, and ultrasound-guided interventions of the upper extremity.
Core Diagnostic Training:
- Shoulder (rotator cuff, supraspinatus, infraspinatus, biceps tendon, subacromial space)
- Elbow (common flexor/extensor tendons, ulnar nerve, joint space)
- Wrist and Hand (carpal tunnel, flexor/extensor tendons, small joints)
Participants will learn:
- Proper probe positioning and scanning planes
- Identification of normal vs pathological tissue
- Dynamic assessment techniques
- Doppler utilization for inflammatory conditions
- Needle tracking fundamentals
Interventional Focus:
- Glenohumeral and subacromial injections
- Biceps tendon sheath injections
- Lateral and medial epicondyle procedures
- Carpal tunnel hydrodissection principles
- Small joint injections
Emphasis is placed on in-plane and out-of-plane needle guidance, maintaining visualization throughout the procedure, and avoiding neurovascular structures.
Day Two: Lower Extremity Precision
Day two transitions to comprehensive lower extremity imaging and intervention.
Core Diagnostic Training:
- Hip (anterior hip joint, iliopsoas tendon, trochanteric bursa)
- Knee (quadriceps tendon, patellar tendon, joint space, Baker’s cyst)
- Ankle and Foot (Achilles tendon, plantar fascia, peroneal tendons)
Participants will develop skills in:
- Large joint scanning protocols
- Effusion identification
- Tendinopathy and tear recognition
- Dynamic stress testing under ultrasound
Interventional Focus:
- Hip joint and trochanteric bursa injections
- Knee intra-articular and peri-tendinous procedures
- Achilles tendon and plantar fascia guidance
- Ankle joint injections
Dr. Jobe emphasizes needle trajectory control, ergonomics, patient positioning, and maintaining continuous visualization to maximize accuracy and safety.
What Sets This Course Apart
- Small group format for individualized instruction
- Extensive hands-on scanning time
- Live model and procedural practice
- Real-time feedback from an experienced clinician
- Focus on translating ultrasound skill into improved clinical outcomes
By the end of the two days, participants leave with:
- A structured scanning protocol for both upper and lower extremities
- Confidence in image interpretation
- Practical experience in ultrasound-guided injections
- A framework for safely integrating MSK ultrasound into practice
This course is designed for providers who want to elevate their procedural precision, improve patient outcomes, and lead with confidence in musculoskeletal medicine.
